To speak English fluently, you must listen to a lot of English– preferably easy and understandable English.  My daily life audio tweets are a great way to get plenty of English audio.   These are a great supplement to my lessons and my podcast.

The Key To Speak English Fluently

In school, you learned with your eyes.  You read textbooks.  You studied grammar books.  You took tests.

Most of all, you learned to think about English.  You analyzed English.

For English writing, that is OK.  When you are reading and writing, you have time.  You can go very slowly.  You can think about every word and every sentence.

The great challenge of speaking and listening to English is speed!  To speak English fluently requires speed!  When a native speaker asks you a question, for example, you don’t have time to think about grammar rules.  You don’t have time to translate.  You must INSTANTLY understand and reply quickly and automatically.

That is the key to speaking English fluently– speed.  The problem is-  the learning methods you learned in school caused you to be slow.   You were trained to think and analyze.  As a result, you have trouble understanding quickly.  And when you try to speak, you often translate from your own native language.

Even worse, when you speak you often worry about using correct grammar.  You are thinking, thinking, thinking all the time.   This is why both your understanding and your speaking are so painfully slow.

My new Power English conversation lessons are almost finished!  I’m excited about this Lesson Pack, because it has a lot of great improvements and benefits.

This lesson pack uses the same teaching methods as my Original Effortless English Lessons.  With these new lessons, however, I have also added material about the “Body” and “Mind” parts of my system.  You’ll learn how to use all three parts of the Effortless English System:  Body, Mind, and Method.

You can learn English conversation in San Francisco this summer, using the Effortless English System!  Our San Francisco English Speaking seminar is already scheduled for May 30th.  To join my class, you must first attend the seminar.

At the seminar I will teach and explain the entire Effortless English System.  I’ll teach you how to use it at home, and how you’ll use it in my SF summer class.

And I have more good news–  Tomoe (my wife) will be there, as will Kristin & Joe from Learn Real English.   Our goal is to create a strong English conversation community in San Francisco.   The seminar is only the first step.  After the seminar, we will start our summer class.

In addition to the seminar and the class, I also plan to create an English Conversation Social Club in the city.  This club will be a mix of English learners and native English speaking volunteers (including Tomoe and I and the Learn Real English teachers).  The goal is to create a fun community where learners can practice their English speaking while volunteers enjoy meeting new friends from different countries.

The social club will be a place where our community grows stronger.

Of course, the seminar is the first step for all of this.

So if you live near San Francisco– definitely come to the May 30th seminar!

English conversation is about connection.  That is the purpose of English conversation– to connect with people around the world.   We want to connect personally and emotionally.  We want to connect with business partners, clients, and customers.  We want to connect with professional peers.  We want to connect with new friends.

While this is obvious, I feel that many students forget the ultimate reason they are learning.  In traditional English conversation classes it’s easy to get too focused on tests, textbooks, grades, and “levels”.  After some time, the student is so worried about these artificial measurements that they forget their ultimate purpose for study.

At the deepest level, English conversation is about community- building and sustaining meaningful connections between people.

Tomoe and I have been discussing this subject a lot.  Our ultimate goal is to use our seminars and lessons and forums as a way to create strong communities.   We want to help people connect and communicate in positive and meaningful ways– and help them stay connected.

The seminars are a first step.   The seminars are designed to bring people together for an amazing learning experience.

But we have even bigger ambitions.  In the future, we hope to use the seminars as a starting point– and then continue to build several local Effortless English communities.   One possible way to do this is to create English conversation communities in each city that hosts a seminar.    After a seminar, we would train volunteer teachers and community leaders and help them create a “conversation club” or volunteer Effortless English program.  Members of the conversation club would continue to meet regularly throughout the year.  Perhaps a volunteer teacher would teach a lesson sometimes.  At other times, the club would function mostly as a positive, fun, meaningful social place where people meet and communicate and make friends– using English as their means of communication.

The next step would be to connect these local Effortless English Conversation groups with each other–  to create an international web of conversation clubs.  Perhaps at that point we would host a big annual international conference for all the club members around the world.

The purpose of this goes beyond just English learning.   We want to use English learning as a tool for a deeper purpose–  to create meaningful and supportive communities of people around the world.
