So many students waste time trying to memorize English vocabulary. They study long lists of vocabulary. They repeat the lists many times, trying to memorize the English words and their translated meanings.
Research shows that 80% of vocabulary learned in this way is forgotten in less than a year. That’s a lot of wasted time and effort.
There’s another problem with this vocabulary learning method– it’s boring and therefore it kills long term motivation. Students must be very careful– killing your motivation is the worst thing you can do. Learning English is a marathon, it’s a long run. It requires high levels of motivation that are sustained for many years.
Using boring vocabulary learning methods, therefore, is doubly bad: it is inefficient and it weakens motivation.
There is a better way– as participants in my recent Breakthrough Seminar in Bangkok learned. It is possible to learn new vocabulary in a way that is far more powerful AND is a lot of fun. When you learn in this way, you will remember 80% one year later! That’s powerful.
The key to deep, powerful, long term vocabulary learning is movement. When we combine strong physical movements with understandable new vocabulary, we create deep connections in our brains and bodies. These connections are long term. They last!
In the seminar, I taught a number of new words using strong actions. The students shouted the new words with me, while simultaneously using the strong actions I showed them. By the end of the lesson, they knew those words well.
But that’s not all. Since Effortless English is a deep learning system, I repeated those new words again– this time in a Mini-Story. Each time I used one of the new words in the story, I used the same physical movement we had been practicing. Through the Mini-Story, the students got even more repetition of the vocabulary, with emotion and strong movements.
Finally, I gave the students homework: download the audio of the same Mini-Story lesson, and listen to that audio every day for one week.
If the students do this, they will learn these new vocabulary words very deeply, and will remember them forever. That is the power of the Effortless English system, and that is the power of using physical movement while learning!

I’m a brazilian guy that started study english about one year ago, using just your method and nothing more. I’m really glad because I can comunicate with other people outside my country, just like you, in your native language.
I’m really happy, just because the words come out to my mouth and my fingers to write it. And I think that is your fault.
I’ve listening a lot of english in so many diferent ways, including watching american series, movies, musics and so on. It has helped me a lot to improve in a great scale my vocabulary and my speak.
I think that now is the time to learn grammar. I will make a course of english now just for learning english grammar roules.

Hi I don’t know if you are right in every situation. I read a text yesterday from my English book I had in my school. The text was taken from a book “Prarie-Town Boy.” In that text there were words like chore boy, teamster, housemaid, slave and other odd words. If you haven’t meet such persons you never learn the words if you don’t read litterature with what words. Who many who don’t works with computers know what a scanner is ? I am sure that eldery people don’t know that word but they know the word
housemaid and choreboy for example.
I had forgotten the word chore boy as I read that text last time when I was in grammarschool.

Maria, I think easy reading is great– it will definitely increase your vocabulary. Do be careful with older books, however.. for example we never say “chore boy” now– it’s kind of a very old phrase

You’re completely right! I tried many times to remember vocabulary words; that was unsuccessful because I forgot them rapidly. Also I noticed that the same with children who try to memorize words and afterwhile they forget them; for example I tried to make my kid (when he was 5 years) to memorize 200 words, after 6 months he forgot 50% of then, and now he could not remember 2% of them (he is now 15 years).
By the way, do you have courses for children or plan to have such? otherwise, can you recommend some sites that take care of children English learning but similar to your approach?

Thanks to Mr. A.G.Hogue. I am improving my English according to my teacher’s method. Really it is a very easy method to remember the new words.

I combine the movment-method with the long term memory technique.
Repeat the words or stories: 30 minutes, 4 hours later, 1 day later, 5 days later, 25 days later and finally 5 months later. This way, you can keep at least 80% of what you have learned, and when you use the movement, the outcome will be much more effective (maybe 90%)

I agree that physical movement can hasten our process of learning, because when the blood is circulating fast in our body it it stimulates our brain. But with time students can be bored with this method too

Thanks for your attempt to best teach people vocabulary,I can remember words in association with other things, either concrete or abstract. However, every thing than can make an association among words in written symbols(alphabetical form), the concrete form, and the picture of the words, it can be in an effective way to recall in the brain.

dear Hog,
I’m happy to find a new model in vocabulary learning for long time and i will inform to all the members of the English teacher association– MGMP( In west Java Provincial cq. Education Department in Developing English in the School/in The class).
further, at sometime i have difficulties to the students to make a sentence in English but I have given them the structure of making a sentence such as subject, predicate and object as a basic to make construct speaking sentence.
i will try to implement the model to the teacher or students in the class activities.

I always was like a dog – I understood a lot in english, but I coudn’t say anything. that was horrible. but some days ago I got call in english (I work in call center). And I didn’t say – “sorry, can you wait a sec, i will find operator, who can speak in english!!” I do it myself!!!! I was so proud!!! I talked in english.
