I thought I Was a Failure

It was my first teaching job … teaching English to adults who didn’t speak English.

I was young. And convinced I could have those people speaking perfect English quickly.

But after six weeks, they could speak no better than when school started. I felt as if I had failed as a teacher in my very first teaching job.

I asked some of the other teachers what I was doing wrong. But they told me they had the same problem … very few of their students improved either.

That’s when I realized something was wrong with the way schools teach English. Our lecture … our drills … our memorization exercises … our tests … just weren’t working.

I read every book I could find on teaching English. I read research papers. I got a Masters degree. I sought out leading language experts.

And that’s how I discovered the work of Dr. Stephen Krashen, Dr. J. Marvin Brown, Dr. James Asher, Dr. Jeff McQuillan, Blaine Ray and other leaders in the field of language science.

Using their findings and learning by trial and error, I gradually developed the System that became Effortless English.

As I put my System into practice, my students began to improve. They learned to speak more confidently. And they seemed to enjoy my classes.
