The Key Rule of English Learning
While there are 7 rules for speaking excellent English, there is one that is most important. It’s actually rule 3 and it’s this: Listen, listen, listen.
Research by Dr. Stephen Krashen found that listening is, in fact, the key to great speaking.
Think about a baby or young child. How do they learn to speak their own language? Do they read textbooks? Do they study vocabulary lists? Do they try to memorize grammar?
No, they learn with their ears. They learn by listening to simple understandable messages.
Listening is the key to better English speaking. You must listen to a lot of understandable, fairly easy English audio.
Speaking is not something you improve by memorizing, studying or reading. You don’t improve it by “practicing” conversations with someone.
Rather, the more your listening comprehension improves the faster your speaking will improve.

I love every of your lessons so much. They’ve never been boring! You don’t only teach English but also how to get success in life. Hi..Mr.Hoge, I’m Indonesian, and many thanks for sending me all the seven rules, interesting but challenging! now I use it as a listening task to my students…hope they can use it as listening practice but also can help them in improving their English, and I also still practice it. This looks like an intriguing course for learning English speaking. The point that listening is the key to better speaking makes a lot of sense, but I’m sure it first seems counter-intuitive to a lot of learners as well as educators. Looking forward to checking out your stuff more.
