Learn English Vocabulary | Denotation and Connotation

Posted in Effortless English Show, Vocabulary on July 20 by AJ

Learn English Vocabulary at two levels- denotation and connotation.  Words have two different levels of meaning.  The denotation is the dictionary definition.  This is the “literal” or direct meaning.  This is the meaning you see in the dictionary.  However, words also have connotations.  These are the deeper meanings- the flavor, or vibration, or taste of the word.  This is the emotional feeling of the word.  To understand a word you only need to know its direct meaning.  However, to use a word skillfully, you must also understand its connotation(s).  Generally this is much more difficult to learn.
